August is National Family Fun Month and what better way to spend time with family but to travel. As you know, we love to take trips to different destinations & one of our all time favorites is Puerto Rico. It’s a mere 3 hour flight from New York with no U.S. passport required, it’s the perfect destination for sun & island fun that’s perfect for everyone. One of my favorite memories in Puerto Rico was swimming in the Bioluminescent bay in Vieques. Although they don’t allow swimming in it anymore, you can venture in the bio bays in the mainland by kayak which I highly suggest. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.

Bio Bays are a magnificent phenomenon for families to experience. At night in the shallow-water lagoon, endless amounts of microscopic, single-celled organisms, known as dinoflagellates, light up a swirl of blue light whenever they are activated by movement. Of the three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the most accessible to families. Yokahu offers a magical excursion in “Laguna Grande” where families will have the opportunity to explore Puerto Rico’s natural treasures.

Located in the nearby Island of Culebra, Culebra Island Adventures offers the very best in aquatic adventures. Excursions include snorkeling and kayaking off some of the top beaches in the world. This tour promises the chance to observe sea turtles, stingrays, starfish, lobster and dozens of species of colorful fish up close in pristine waters. Families can also swim with the majestic green sea turtles in their native sea grass beds in Tamarindo Beach.

A hiker’s paradise, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest Service, El Yunque National Forest, has plenty to offer including natural pools, waterfalls, tropical vegetation, exotic birds and wildlife. Tours are available and families can also arrange in advance to camp overnight.

Toro Verde is an Ecological Adventure Park where travelers can spend the day enjoying some of the most breathtaking views in Puerto Rico while experiencing adventure with family. Perfect for families who love the thrill of an adrenaline rush, Toro Verde provides more miles of zip line cables than any other park in the world. Toro Verde recently opened “The Monster,” the world’s longest zip line, measuring in at 1.6 miles or the size of 28 football fields. It was certified by Guinness World Records.

The Arecibo Observatory is the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope and one of the most important research centers for Radio Astronomy, Terrestrial Aeronomy and Planetary Radar in the Western Hemisphere. Families can take a tour and learn how scientists use the observatory to monitor radio emissions from distant galaxies and search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
