This past Sunday Andre & I attended a “Family Fun Day” aboard Norwegian cruise lines newest ship the Getaway. You’ve probably heard about this ship since this week it will be the Bud Light hotel for the Superbowl. But on this day a bunch of moms and their kids got to roam the ship & enjoy its amenities.
We saw the ship on our way down on the West Side Highway. It was docked among the frozen waters of the Hudson. Andre loved the vibrant colors on the outside of the ship. As we went to check in, I had a bit of an issue with my name not being on the list but his was. He was truly ready to board with out me! Luckily after a phone call, the mishap was taken care of and I was granted my pass. Whew!
As we walked toward the ship, it brought back memories of our cruise 4 years ago. What an amazing time we had back then and upon boarding I could see that this ship would offer that as well.
We were shown into the Illusionarium room. It’s a magician world. The decor had the kids entertained. Andre saw pics of Harry Houdini and some dinosaur teeth. He was pretty impressed. While we dined on some delicious food, we were entertained by Norwegian’s top acts. Burn the Floor, Lysander the magician and Legally Blonde the musical. The entertainment was mesmerizing. Andre enjoyed the high speed dancing while I laughed at the funny antics of legally blonde. Of course, the kids had to be entertained by Nickelodeon’s characters SpongeBob, Patrick, Dora & Diego. All the kids were on their feet & couldn’t wait to grab a shot with their favorites. Next it was time for our tour!
We were taken on a detailed tour of the ship. There is definitely something for everyone in your family. There’s a vast selection of restaurants from Wasabi Sushi bar to Le Bistro French restaurant. For the nightlife, you have 12 options for entertainment. I am intrigued by the Svedka Ice bar. It’s 17 degrees indoors. You are given a coat upon entrance to endure the temps. But hey that’s our high temperatures lately so I’m sure us New Yorkers can handle it! Once I told hubby about this place, he asked “When do we sail?”
We were able to visit some of the rooms as well, which I was ready to hide under a bed. Gorgeous and spacious! If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you know the rooms are small. I always have to have a balcony now because there’s just some peace about sitting out in the dark without a care in the world. It’s the freedom of being among the open seas. I was so impressed with the shower space! I know its trivial but I need space in there lol.
When you want to just refresh & revive, you can head to the spa. There are over 50 treatment options. I think I would just hide out in the thermal room. They have these heated tile loungers that are heaven. The kids loved it. With the frigid temperatures that day, those loungers were just right.
My favorite section is the casino! I saw the Wheel of Fortune slot machines & I was excited. It is one of the largest casinos at sea. I know the boyz would be found at the 3 story sports complex on the upper decks. There’s a basketball court, rock climbing, mini golf and a spider web climbing cage. Or if you’re feeling a little adventurous, walk the plank 8 feet over the side of the ship.
There’s ton of fun to be had by the kiddos too. They have a splash academy that will keep your kids busy with busy and imaginations running. Norwegian offers exclusive Nickelodeon entertainment. If you want a date night with the hubster, you can drop your child off at the academy. They had a Wii U and Andre did not want to leave.
There’s so much on this ship that I can’t contain it all in one post. You really have to see it for yourself. We were disappointed that we couldn’t stow away and live there for a few days.
Heading back out into the cold was just wrong Norwegian! LOL
The Getaway will sail out of Miami for 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruises starting February 8th. For booking information check here.
